Design for manufacture
The Design for Manufacture (DFM) process starts when we receive parts to quote for tooling. The process is related to DFMEA (Design failure mode and effect analysis) or PFMEA (Process failure mode and effect analysis). However, it is focused on tooling and moulding processes.
During the DFM stage, we look at how we would design the tooling and if the parts are designed to allow for feasible manufacture.
For mould tooling our attention is focused on the following key features:
- Tool function
- Feed Location
- Part lines
- Wall thickness
- Ejection

For the moulding process our attention is focused on the following key features:
Tooling dimensions
for fit to press/handling considerations
Feed and material flow – Hot runner or cold feed
Cooling
Warp analysis
Venting
Ejection of parts – robot or operator handling
We complete fill analysis using VISI Flow software to help determine gate geometry, feed locations, and vent requirements.
We also show results for pressure at the end of fill, cycle times, and warpage.
